If the landlord violates the deadline, they may forfeit ALL right to withhold any portion of your deposit.

Interest Requirements

Not required. Your landlord does not have to pay interest on your deposit.

  • Written lease: 6 years
  • Oral lease: 6 years

Important Exceptions & Edge Cases

MCL § 554.609: Within 30 days of move-out, landlord must mail itemized list of damages to tenant's forwarding address. If landlord fails to provide list within 30 days, must return full deposit. Separate 4-business-day requirement to notify of intent to deduct.
